Embracing the Spirit of the Fringe
The St. Lou Fringe Festival is where Same Difference was able to establish a solid foundation, a niche, and most importantly a voice. That voice, encouraging people to be unabashedly themselves, in turn, helped us find a new level of comfort in being unforgivably us. “Stop Bein’ Weird” was a turning point: a chance to develop this new found love and talent for music while still incorporating our theatrical background. Being awarded the “Spirit of the St. Lou Fringe” award, as well as, being asked to close out last year’s festival were welcome surprises that we didn’t know would lead to an invitation to perform at this year’s opening ceremony. It is truly an honor to be welcomed back to the Fringe to continue spreading our message of fun, positivity, and individuality to all.
Last year, Darrious Varner took a leap of faith, applied and was selected via lottery to participate in the 2017 St Lou Fringe Festival. He felt the urge to expand his repertoire by exploring his interest in music and, together with his friend Jaz Tucker, he began writing and refining a number of original songs. Then, the two, under the name Same Difference, decided to collaborate on a show combining storytelling with their shared interest in music. The result was a positive, uplifting show with lyrics that celebrate people by welcoming and acknowledging them for their unique individuality.
That show resonated with audiences, making it a surprise hit at the Festival, for Darrious, Jaz and all the delighted audience members. Each performance included clapping, dancing and laughter as the two men opened up about their personal experiences then launched into songs powered by catchy, thoughtful lyrics and a steady rhythm you could dance to.
The St Lou Fringe Festival is pleased to welcome Same Difference back as hosts of our Opening Ceremony and Kick-Off Party. This free event launches the 10-day Fringe and introduces the shows and artists, culminating in a short concert by the dynamic duo. You’re invited to join us Under the Big Top tonight at 7pm through our closing ceremony, Saturday, August 25.
